History of Brownian Motion in a Nutshell

This chapter provides a concise overview of the historical development and key milestones in the understanding of Brownian motion. Originating in the early nineteenth century, the phenomenon gained prominence through the pioneering work of botanist Robert Brown, who observed erratic movements of pollen grains in water. This curious observation remained a puzzle until Albert Einstein, Marian Smoluchowski, William Sutherland, and Paul Langevin explained Brownian motion as the result of the random collisions of molecules. Subsequent contributions from Jean Perrin, who experimentally confirmed the theoretical framework, and Marian Smoluchowski, who provided a rigorous mathematical treatment, further solidified our understanding of this stochastic process.
