Reimagining the International Student Experience at US Colleges: A Call for Innovation of Practice

International students are a significant and growing student population at colleges and universities in the United States, yet they are among the underresourced and undersupported populations. International Students require a myriad of functions, ranging from student arrival services, orientation to the academic norms, communicating cultural information and academic expectations, to ensuring that international students are familiar with the pertinent institutional and governmental policies. Yet these functions are often isolated and not well integrated into the overall student support structure. This chapter calls for a critical reimagining of international student support within the college experience and calls upon ISS and student affairs to more effectively address the needs of international students and design for their success, and offers recommendations for those in the profession.
