Hope … An Implacable Cosmos-Endowed Vitalism
摘要
Hope is a dynamic concept characterized by its infinite presence in human lives. Indeed, as an integral force hope is an inherent quality of cosmos. However, there are ethno-cultural variations in the contexts of hope. Against this backdrop, this chapter traces the origins of hope in the process of evolution and in diverse theoretical traditions. Using illustrations from life experiences, it is posited that hope offers an anchor for survival and sustains life in adverse circumstances. Since hope is experienced both within an individual or collective and conceded to exist outside as a protection from menace or risk, it needs to be inculcated. It is becoming an important concern in the contemporary period when the struggles of daily life are eroding it. It is concluded that hope can be learned, nurtured, enhanced, or denied, but it is always present. It is an assurance for survival.
