Anatomy of the Spine for Interventionalist

Interventional pain physicians performing spinal injections must have a detailed understanding of the spinal anatomy to perform safe and effective spinal procedures. An interventionalist must learn the important aspects of the spinal anatomy as it relates to interventional pain management. The specialty of interventional pain management involves physicians from multiple disciplines, who come with various backgrounds and skill sets. Radiologists are skilled at fluoroscopy and fluoroscopic anatomy; physiatrists have a deep understanding of anatomy; anesthesiologists have good tactile technique; and other specialists may have strong surgical skills. All must have a clear understanding of the anatomy of the spine, including anatomical planes, nomenclature, and the multiple compartments of the spinal column which consist of bony elements, discs, soft tissue, and nerves and blood vessels. Appropriate knowledge of this anatomy is essential to being able to perform safe and effective interventional procedures.
