Political Islamism—The Case of Sweden and Denmark

This chapter deals with the current situation of Political Islam in Sweden and Denmark. The chapter gives a brief background on how Islamism has developed in each country and looks at differences between the two Scandinavian neighbors. In Sweden the Muslim Brotherhood, and Political Islam in general, has had a larger impact overall and penetrated deeper into society. In Denmark, though, the overall impact is less pronounced but on the other hand, activists are more prone to violence. This is borne out below when noting the various organizations active in both countries. Also included is a list of the major Islamist organizations active in Sweden and Denmark. An important part of the study is devoted to the impact (both present and future) that Islamism might have in both countries.
