Political Islamism in Germany

The chapter presents the historical development of the Islamist scene in Germany in its very diverse forms and manifestations. One focus of the article is the transformation of Islamism from a marginal phenomenon of the migrant guest worker milieu to a firmly anchored part of Germany’s extremist landscape. Since Germany was divided into the Federal Democratic Republic of Germany (BRD) and the German Democratic Republic (DDR) until 3rd of October 1990, the period under consideration is maily the time after the unification of Germany.
