Political Islam in Austria

The authors show how in the early 1960s Muslim Brothers in Austria were involved in building the structures from which the Islamic Religious Community in Austria (IGGÖ) was to emerge. In the 1970s, the Milli Görüş movement also established itself in Austria. Today, it appears under the name Islamic Federation. Together with the ATIB-Union, the Austrian offshoot of the Turkish state religious authority Diyanet, the Islamic Federation dominates the IGGÖ, the legally recognized representation of Muslims in Austria that has decision-making authority over Muslim affairs. In Austria, the question of how to prevent representatives of Islamist organizations from acting as representatives of Muslims is always also about how political decision-makers deal with the fact that representatives of Islamist organizations officially represent Muslims in the country.
