Eating Disorders in the DSM-5

This chapter reviews the diagnostic criteria, and that appear in the “Feeding and Eating Disorders” chapter of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Upon extensive reviews of the literature, the DSM-5 work group sought to provide clarifications and modifications to the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa and also include binge eating disorder as a formal eating disorder diagnosis. Additionally, the Feeding and Eating Disorder section grew to include three additional disorders (i.e., avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, rumination disorder, and pica) previously described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) section “Feeding and Eating Disorders of Infancy or Early Childhood.” Finally, the present chapter also provides information regarding differential diagnoses and helpful questions for clinicians to guide decision regarding diagnoses.
