Fertility, Pregnancy, and Maternity in Women with Eating Disorders
摘要
Eating disorders (EDs) occur predominantly in women of childbearing age. EDs may significantly lower women’s fertility and prompt them to seek fertility treatment. However, maternal EDs pose significant risks for complicated pregnancies as well as adverse peri- and neonatal outcomes, including metabolic and neurodevelopmental sequelae, and the manifestation of ED behaviors later in the life of the offspring. Next to malnutrition being the most obvious reason, ED-related parental behaviors may be further causal factors for adverse outcomes. It is therefore important to screen and closely monitor women with EDs wishing to conceive or who are already expecting. An interdisciplinary specialists’ approach is needed to ensure optimal maternal and fetal health. Medical education and training are required to increase awareness and qualify medical professionals to recognize and address ED symptoms in mothers and mothers-to-be.
