Imperial Honours

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, royal honours were closely allied with the militaristic and imperial policies of the British aristocracy. New honours were created and old honours enlarged to legitimate imperial expansion, to reward military leaders, and to reinforce the quasi-military character of royal honours. This was, however, a period in which the development of new class relations began to undermine the ‘traditional’ honours system.
