摘要

African monarchs have always been leaders of their communities and at the centre of community fortunes. Their role at the time of the African Slave Trade and the colonial onslaught is well documented by students of African history. Traditional rulership in Africa has always been considered a conservative and controversial force. It still is. During the colonial period, German as well as British, chiefs were pillars of the colonial policy of indirect rule and native authority.
