The Kamienne Mountains—Late Palaeozoic Volcanic Terrain Shaped by Late Quaternary Landslides

The Kamienne Mountains are an elongated medium-altitude mountain range in the central part of the Sudetes, built mainly of volcanic and subvolcanic rocks of Permian age. In many places they overlie sedimentary formations, creating significant geomechanical contrasts that facilitate rock-slope instability. Around 60 landslides have been identified in the range using field geomorphological mapping and LiDARLiDAR DTM interpretation. The largest singular landslide occupies 25 ha, whereas the largest landslide complexes are nearly 50 ha. Combined landform mapping and geophysical surveys demonstrate a variety of displacement types, including rotationalLandslide, landslidingrotational and translationalLandslide, landslidingtranslational slides, flowslidesFlowslide, rock-slope failures and falls, and lateral spreadingLateral spread (spreading). In specific localities slope deformation is ongoing, although historical records of large landslides are not available. Good access to many landslide localities provides a good basis to develop the region as a geotourist destination, with special focus on landslide-related geositesGeosite.
