Design, Estimation and Implementation Strategy of Wastewater Treatment Plant—A Case Study at Centurion University of Technology and Management, Odisha

Water scarcity nowadays not only causes problems for humans, but it also poses serious challenges in the case of eco-system growth. As a result, there is a serious need to investigate any alternative uses for used water in both domestic and agricultural activities. The present investigation used a robust approach to build a wastewater treatment plant at Centurion University of Technology and Management (CUTM), Paralakhemundi campus in Odisha and use it for agricultural purposes. The study area is located in the Paralakhemundi block of the Gajapati district of Odisha, where water is scarcer than in other parts of the district. It has been noticed that at the time of summer, all water bodies dry up, and the people of the district depend largely on this contaminated water which causes several health problems. The current study was carried out by designing and constructing a 750 m2 area wastewater treatment plant. The campus includes three staff quarters, five student’s hostels along with three hostel messes, with a total population estimated to be more than 1500. Wastewater from the aforementioned structures is collected, and the plant treats it mostly for agricultural use. A bar and screen chamber, an oil and grease tank, a collecting tank, a sedimentation tank, a filter tank, and a control panel make up the treatment plant. The daily water supply is 279 cum, and the average garbage generated per hour is 9.29 cum. The design has been done as the highest flow capacity is to be 27.89 cum/hr when the peak factor is 3. The anticipated cost amounts to be Rs. 25,75,539. Successfully treated water meets the appropriate standards meant for agricultural and gardening practises. A total of 10 hectares of field crops, horticultural crops, plantation crops, an herbal garden, grass, and a playground are watered by this treatment facility.
