Evolution of Rolling Bearing Technology

This paper makes a historical review of rolling bearing systems, their origins, evolution and technological development, up to their current conception. The article is based on the first rolling solutions given to transport issues thousands of years ago, including the emergence of the wheel. Attention will also be paid to mechanical devices that solved the contact problem by means of rolling mechanisms. Particularly important archaeological finds will be studied due to their novelty and the technological solution they implied. From the Renaissance, graphic and written records will also be taken as documentary bases. In a later period, the appearance of the first rolling bearing systems, their uses, technical solutions provided and evolution will be detailed, until reaching rolling bearing patents and the birth of large bearing manufacturing companies. The article will conclude by specifying the great technological advances in existing bearing designs today.
