The Problem and Its Scale: Privacy Invasions of Pakistani Media

This chapter highlights the multifaceted issues of privacy infringements by the media in Pakistan in a critical manner. Keeping in view the peculiarities of Pakistani society, this chapter resorts to media’s content analysis and comprehensively examines the various dimensions of invasive media practices, shedding light on their profound impact on individuals and society as a whole. It scrutinizes the media's coverage of sensitive topics, including sexual violence, the exposure of women's private lives, and its effects on victims’ lives as well as children's wellbeing. Additionally, the chapter investigates how the media treats public figures, often sensationalizing personal matters and engaging in grief journalism, all at the expense of privacy and dignity. Furthermore, it explores media reporting during legal proceedings, addressing concerns such as public shaming, the so-called investigative journalism, and sting operations that encroach upon privacy rights. The chapter also provides an insightful analysis of the current state of media regulatory affairs in Pakistan, highlighting the existing gaps and challenges within the regulatory framework. As the chapter unfolds, it prompts a critical question: Does Pakistan require a dedicated privacy law to effectively address these pervasive privacy violations?
