The chapter that follows will examine Shakespeare’s presentation of prison and punishment throughout the play Measure for Measure. It will explore Shakespeare’s presentation of justice and its uncertainties, alongside changing law and law enforcement in reference to the penal system of the seventeenth century to which Shakespeare may have been reacting.
