This chapter references some of the major applied theatre programmes (predominantly in the UK and the United States), which have shaped the field and developed this area of study. With world conferences, publications, journal articles, and a range of varied projects dedicated to the use of Shakespeare’s plays in prisons, Shakespeare has a long and now established role within penal settings.
