Information Retrieval and Hypertext

In this chapter, we briefly introduce different information retrieval techniques such as Boolean and vector space models. We cover one of the most prominent information retrieval applications, namely, Web search. Even in its early years, the Web contained a vast number of documents that made it necessary to rank the documents returned for a query. We explain the perhaps most popular ranking algorithm, PageRank, which benefits from the hypertext nature of Web documents.
