Challenging Terrorist Ideologies Through Education
摘要
In recent years, counterterrorism measures have been integrated into British education policy, requiring schools to prevent children from being drawn into terrorism. This shift in approach necessitates schools to act as ‘safe spaces’ for discussing and challenging extremist ideas. However, the lack of a clear definition of terrorism complicates this task, as the associated power-knowledge dynamics shape the ideologies teachers are expected to address. This chapter explores the influence of power-knowledge dynamics on the ideologies teachers are tasked with challenging, focusing on the dominant association between terrorism and Islam-inspired extremism. Examining the complex power dynamics surrounding terrorism, especially in relation to religion, the chapter underscores the challenges teachers face in discussing these sensitive topics in classrooms. The chapter highlights the tension between addressing extremist ideologies while avoiding potential religious or racial prejudices. It also emphasizes the need to consider voices that challenge dominant discourses, as these perspectives shape classroom discussions. The chapter concludes by advocating for critical and academic discussions about terrorism, with the aim of challenging the concepts of ‘terrorism’ and ‘terrorist ideologies’ rather than solely addressing specific ideologies associated with terrorism. This approach allows for conversations about stereotypes, prejudices, and hegemonic perceptions of terrorism. By engaging students in meaningful dialogues, the education system can contribute to preventing terrorism by fostering nuanced understanding and critical thinking.
