摘要

This chapter delves into the complex landscape of Muslim political agency within British politics, particularly focusing on how Muslim civil society organizations respond to the challenge of misrecognition. The prevalence of misperceptions and misrepresentations regarding Muslim political involvement often leads to accusations of fostering sectarian divisions or prioritizing religious identities over broader citizenship. The chapter examines how Muslim organizations, including the Muslim Council of Britain, ENGAGE, the Muslim Public Affairs Committee, the Youelect initiative, and Operation Black Vote, strategically position themselves in response to these experiences of misrecognition. Through qualitative interviews and analysis of campaign materials, the chapter explores various modes of response to misrecognition, including minority representation, the characterization of the “Muslim Vote,” and political neutrality. Despite the challenges posed by misrecognition, the study highlights the creative negotiation and reflexivity exercised by these organizations in projecting meaningful political subjectivities that challenge stigmatization and enhance Muslim political agency within British society. The analysis emphasizes the need to contextualize civic and political claims within the broader political landscape while also recognizing the potential for strategic awareness to overcome oppressive narratives of misrecognition.
