The US Education System, the Complex Stressors, and the Power of Humanistic Leadership
摘要
The impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on educational systems worldwide have been far-reaching, revealing the critical role schools at all levels play in our various societies. In the United States (US), the pandemic, along with large-scale racial reckoning and political divisiveness, added strife to the already precarious state of the US schools. Complex contextual stressors, like socio-economic inequality, political battles, student mental health, behavioral issues, changing teaching standards, and reactive policy mandates contribute to toxic stress, occupational burnout, and limited teacher functioning. Leadership approaches can compound or mitigate the pressure and diminished capacity experienced by educators and administrators. How can educators and school leaders responsively navigate the daily challenges they encounter? Do humanistic leadership principles offer a better way for educators and school leaders to traverse the complicated landscape? Through a review of pertinent literature, this paper explores these questions, the complex contextual stressors present in education, and the effects these factors have on educators in the United States. This paper also clarifies whether the issues discussed are uniquely American problems. The humanistic leadership lens is applied, and tangible strategies and practices are provided.
