Solving the Mobility Problem Through Telework

The World Bank projects that by the year 2050, approximately 66% of the world’s population will reside in urban areas. This growing population concentration poses new challenges that cities must face. To prepare for this reality, it is essential to examine the factors that may influence the adoption of teleworking, and thus justify its sustainable implementation under normal conditions. The analysis carried out revealed that demographic factors, such as gender and age, do not have a significant impact on the adoption of teleworking. However, behavioral factors such as the type of transport used, the distance traveled and the time spent commuting to the workplace, directly influence the acceptance of this work modality. In addition, it was estimated that with the application of teleworking, the percentage of vehicles that could stop circulating would be between 19.4% and 38%, and that the kilograms of carbon dioxide that could be stopped from being emitted would be between 2.17 and 5.43 kg per vehicle. However, organizations must also address the hyper-connectivity and cybersecurity challenges associated with teleworking in the context of Industry 5.0.
