Tracheal Stenosis

Post-intubation injury is the most common cause of nonneoplastic tracheal stenosis; this is also the most common indication for tracheal resection. Reconstruction after resection is by primary anastomosis, as currently there is no reliable prosthesis for reconstruction. Therefore, anastomotic tension leading to dehiscence is the greatest risk of tracheal resection, limiting the length of tracheal that can safely be removed. In addition to surgeon experience, the experience of the entire team (anesthesia, operating room staff, nursing staff, and the postoperative care teams) is vital for successful outcomes after this complex procedure.
