摘要

Muscle wasting and weakness is common in ICU patients. In Vietnam, tetanus is a cause of ICU admission and patients are particularly vulnerable to muscle wasting – itself impacting long-term functional outcome. These patients may benefit from active and passive exercise to improve strength and maintain limb range of movement. To this end, a prototype cycle rehabilitation device was created, offering continuous passive/active lower limb pedaling motion for ICU patients with tetanus. The cycling rehabilitation device provides continuous passive/active motion through pedaling for the lower limbs of patients in ICU with the aim of preventing joint stiffness and improving muscle strength. In passive mode, the pedaling velocity varies from 0 to 50 rpm to maintain joint and muscle range of movement without requiring patient effort. In active mode, resistance can be varied to enable progressive resistance training.
