Conclusion: How Observing a Micro Reality Offers New Macro Perspectives

This chapter discusses the results from the fieldwork, proposing a categorization of correctional officers based on their level of discipline, which results in four types of correctional officers characterized by their varying levels of identification with their professional role and the institution. Additionally, the chapter portrays correctional officers as active agents who not only undergo discipline but also administer it. It presents the diverse approaches they employ to fulfill their professional roles, corresponding to the four types identified in the research. Finally, the chapter explores how the discretionary use of punishment and reward practices reflects the distinct attitudes of disciplined correctional officers, offering a critical assessment of the gendered nature of their decision-making processes.
