Correspondence Schoenbein—Grove

After meeting in Birmingham at the annual convention of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in August of 1839, Christian Friedrich Schoenbein and William Robert Grove became friends. The close and personal relationship between the two is documented by their correspondence between 1839 and 1868. Twenty-five letters of Schoenbein to Grove are preserved in the Archives of the Royal Institution in London. Twenty-seven original letters of Grove to Schoenbein can be found at the University Library in Basel. In addition, there are undated fragments of letters and letter drafts in the legacy of Schoenbein. Also, two letters to Schoenbein by Francis Watkins, the talented instrument maker of London, can be found at Basel.
