Morality, Ethics, and Wisdom: Remarks on Applications of Logic

The main goal of the paper is to present some definitions and relations between morality, ethics, and wisdom, primarily based on the conceptions of Joseph M. Bocheński. This approach takes formal methods into consideration and shows how applied logic can contribute to these extra-mathematical issues. Special emphasis is placed on wisdom as an empirical protoscience and on its relation with rationality. Bocheński’s outlook is compared with John Corcoran’s perspective on critical thinking and the role of licencia pedagogica. Finally, the limits of the application of formal methods are also considered.
