Metallurgical Coke Production with Biomass Additives. Part 2. Production and Characterization of Laboratory Biocokes

This chapter considers the relevance of biocoke production, and the practice of adding biomass to the coal blend for coking is analyzed. High-temperature laboratory coking of coal blends has been carried out using three types of biomass additives, namely wood, sunflower husks, and straw, which were added in the form of pellets and chips in the case of wood. The amount of additive was from 1 wt.% up to 5 wt.% for sunflower husk and straw, and from 1 wt.% up to 10 wt.% for wood chips and up to 45 wt.% for wood pellets. The analysis of the obtained results made it possible to develop a scheme of the mechanism of co-pyrolysis of coal and biomass. The fulfilled studies show that the production of biocoke can expand biomass use in the industry due to fuel production and reducing agents with the necessary properties. Simultaneously with this aim, the issue of reducing the use of fossil fuels and the corresponding reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is being resolved. Thus, complex tasks have been reflected: using a renewable energy source, obtaining a product of the required quality, and introducing environmentally friendly technologies in the industry.
