At 40–45% of body mass, the functional capability of skeletal mass is a critical component of our health and well-being. As a result, the proper development and ongoing training of muscle is essential to maintaining one’s strength, mobility, and physical condition over the lifespan. While skeletal muscle is a highly adaptable tissue, becoming stronger and increasingly efficient metabolically with regular physical activity and organized training, sometimes the imposed load overwhelms the capacity of muscle, and on occasion, accidents happen—in both cases, a muscle is damaged. Research has shown that damaged muscle has the capability to repair itself, but sometimes treating the muscle using various training programs and/or therapeutic modalities are required to optimize recovery and regeneration. The most effective intervention strategy is the result of effective interaction between basic scientists and therapy practitioners, which historically has been challenging as a result of diverse backgrounds, interests, skills, and cultures. What is needed is to ensure optimal intervention strategies are the cultivation of ongoing opportunities for exchange of knowledge and ideas between therapy and sport/ exercise professionals.
