Microalgal Biomass-Derived Biochars

摘要

Microalgal biomass is a promising alternative that can be transformed into other value-added products such as biochar. In the last decade, the preparation of biochar from microalgal biomass has been on the increase because of their cost, availability, high production rate, and eco-friendly character viewed as a circular economy if the microalgal biomass came from a wastewater treatment process. Additionally, microalgal biomass has a high content of nitrogen, phosphorus, and oxygen, which remain in the biochars as functional groups, improving its properties. This chapter summarizes the recent research progress on the synthesis of biochar derived from different microalgal biomasses and its applications in environmental field as carbon sequestrant, pollutants adsorbent, and soil additive, as well as in energy storage as electrode material in electrochemical devices.
