Fundamentals of Surrogate Modeling and Surrogate-Assisted Optimization

The chapter summarizes the fundamentals of surrogate modeling and surrogate-based optimization. The material is not a systematic and exhaustive presentation of the subject, yet it should give the reader sufficient background information necessary to understand the remaining parts of the book. We cover the concept of surrogate-based optimization, discuss surrogate modeling flow and basic methods (both data-driven and physics-based), as well as outline selected surrogate-assisted design procedures employed in high-frequency engineering.
