Protection of Buildings in the Former Quarry Area Against Effects of Rockfall

In November 2019, a rockfall was recorded in the area of the former quarry in Vranov nad Dyjí, Chech Republic. The block of rock fell into the yard of a house built at the bottom of the quarry and hit its perimeter wall. Rockfall poses a great danger to persons moving daily in the yard area below the rock face from which the block has separated. It is not only the large rock blocks that pose a danger to residents, but also the smaller rock particles that fall into the accumulation area. The paper presents the process of determination of shear strength of the rock massiff, described alternatively by the Mohr–Coulomb and Barton and Bandis criterion. The risk analysis based on the Rock Slope Rating-Risk Classification (RSR-RC) approach, the stability calculation and the technical measures proposed to reduce the risk of rockfall are also presented.
