Relocation of the Riverbed and Modification of the Riverbank After Landslides Caused by Water Erosion and Heavy Rainfall

Problems with landslides in the Breclav region of the Czech Republic, occurred in September 2014. In Bulhary village, 14 houses stand on a hill towering over the river Dyje, which lost stability after heavy rains. Cracks in the slope threatened all these 14 houses, and the inhabitants of the two closest to the crest of the hill were evacuated. Firefighters temporarily stabilized the slope with a bench built up in the lower part of the slope from total of 7000 m3 of stone. Based on the calculation of the insufficient degree of stability of the slope achieved by the application of these temporary measures, a new variant study of the geometric arrangement of the banks was prepared. Subsequently, the degree of stability was calculated for the condition after the completion of the relocation of the Dyje riverbed and backfilling of the original bed with the material obtained during the new bed excavation. The paper describes the process of design and the stability assessment of the proposed remedial works.
