摘要

Indigenous phytochemistry (i.e., the understanding of the chemical constituents of plants by people of a certain locale) is key to the use of plants in herbal medicine. The chemical composition, beneficial interactions, and therapeutic applications of medicinal plants are discussed, and the importance of indigenous knowledge systems and cultural wisdom is emphasized in this chapter. It delves into the cultural ideas and perceptions that contribute to the success of traditional healing practices, as well as the rituals that accompany them. A more holistic and culturally acceptable approach to healthcare can be achieved by learning about the cultural importance of medicinal plants. Ethical considerations and working together with indigenous communities are also highlighted. Thus, as partners in research, they must treat each other with respect and work together to safeguard intellectual property and distribute profits fairly. Moreover, herbal medicine can be more welcoming as well as culturally sensitive if indigenous knowledge is given due respect and indigenous populations are included in the research process since indigenous phytochemistry has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of herbal medicine’s healing properties. Researchers can tap into the potential of indigenous knowledge systems by combining cultural understanding, ecological expertise, and cutting-edge science to create effective, culturally grounded herbal treatments that also support long-term health.
