Challenges in the Storage of Herbal Medicine Products and Strategies for Sustainable Management

Medicinal plants, the world’s richest source of herbal products, are rapidly disappearing as global demand for these resources surges. This chapter aims to serve as a reliable guide for the conservation and responsible utilization of medicinal plants by examining current and future global trends, developments, and preservation strategies. The sustainable use of these resources, incorporating good agricultural practices, conservation methods like in situ and ex situ conservation, and cultivation practices, is deemed essential for their long-term viability. To enhance the yield and potency of therapeutic plants, we propose adopting biotechnological methods, such as tissue culture, micropropagation, synthetic seed technology, and molecular marker-based techniques. Additionally, it is crucial to ensure the safe and effective use of Ayurvedic herbal medicines through proper storage and handling of plants intended for various Ayurvedic dosage forms. This involves establishing sound storage facilities, raw herb packaging, adherence to API format for herb testing, microbial elimination from herbs, sterilization processes, and best practices for spice storage. Regulating the storage, packaging, and processing of raw herbs for various Ayurvedic herbal medicines is pivotal to enhance the evaluation of quality, safety, and effectiveness in the realm of medicinal plants. Standardizing these practices will produce safer, more effective, and higher-quality herbal products, potentially expediting the global adoption of the Indian medical system.
