Advances in Reducing the Linnean Shortfall of Middle and South American Mammals (2000–2024): An Era of Species Discovery
摘要
We are in an era of new species discovery; this holds true for mammals in general, but especially the mammalian fauna from Middle and South America (MSA). Here, I summarize new mammalian nominal forms described at the species level from January 2000 to December 2024 with type localities in MSA. During this period, 405 new species were described, an average of 16.2 new species per year. These new species span the 14 mammalian orders present in MSA, the order with the most newly described species being Rodentia. New species were described from 23 MSA countries, the country with the most newly described species being Brazil. Based on the observed accumulation of newly discovered mammalian species, as well as our understanding of the current state of taxonomic practices, the number of new species from MSA will keep steadily growing into the near future.
