Enzyme Immobilization

Immobilization is a comparatively old approach to make enzymes technically usable. The aims are both to increase productivity and enzyme lifetimes and to improve practical handling and facilitate enzyme recovery. This chapter gives an overview of the main, practically relevant immobilization principles for enzymes and explains their most important molecular and physicochemical effects on catalytic performance. Key parameters of the immobilization process and the resulting immobilizates are described, and the choice of method is considered against the background of a technical application.
