High-Velocity Impact Applications with Shear-Thickening Fluid

Shear-thickening fluids (STFs) belong to a special class of non-Newtonian fluids, which exhibit transition from a low-to-high viscosity state when subjected to shear stress. Due to this unique characteristic of STFs, they are extensively used in shock, impact, and vibration mitigation applications. In the last few decades, STFs have been widely used in the development of personal protective equipments such as helmets, hip-protection pads, puncture-resistant surgical gloves, etc. This chapter explores in detail the high-velocity impact–resistant applications of STFs in various domains such as sports industry, space industry, medical field, defense sector, and various mechanical platforms for the design and development of vibration dampeners, shock absorbers. and other STF-assisted devices. The prime objective is to present a thorough review of STF applications in the high-strain rate domain to resist high-velocity impacts.
