Neurorehabilitation Testing, Metrics, and Procedures in Acquired Brain Injury

Many testing modalities, neuroimaging techniques, and biomarkers are used to assess pathology and function, predict outcome, and lead treatment planning after acquired brain injury. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have played an essential role in the triage and prognostication of brain injury. Prompt identification of pathology on CT can help direct medical, surgical, and minimally invasive interventions in acquired brain injury. Medical and surgical specialists also use several clinical grading instruments to assess the severity of the damage and the expected degree of recovery. Serum biomarkers are actively being researched, and a few biomarkers have attained approval for a limited role with clinical use.
