Birds of the Campos Sulinos

The degradation of the Campos Sulinos, which are part of the Pampa and Atlantic Forest biomes in Brazil, has been extensively discussed in the scientific community and society as a whole, with a focus on conservation efforts. Birds play a crucial role in these open-vegetation ecosystems and contribute significantly to their biodiversity. However, many questions remain unanswered regarding population sizes, distribution, life history, migration patterns and ecology of the bird species found in the region. This chapter aims to provide a comprehensive overview of existing knowledge on the open-vegetation birds of the Campos Sulinos. Drawing from a compilation of literature and personal knowledge, we explore various aspects related to the life history and conservation of these birds in southern Brazil. By enhancing our understanding of this significant component of Brazilian biodiversity, we hope to complement previous studies, facilitate access to information and ultimately contribute to the conservation of birds and their habitats.
