The “Transitioning” from 5G to 6G

5G has introduced new paradigms of mobile network design and deployment and delivery of new services. Starting with 3GPP Release 15, 5G has evolved with Releases 16 and 17 and now fully supports all the envisioned service scenarios and, consequently, many vertical sectors and industries. The path to 5G-Advanced has just begun with Release 18. Meanwhile, industry and research have started to think about what 6G will be, and a common vision of 6G providing a cyber-physical continuum experience exists. This chapter outlines the path from 5G to 6G. We present the 5G architecture, discuss its progress, release by release, and finally arrive at 6G, presenting initial architectural views and promising leading technologies.
