The Impact of Covid-19 on Carbon Emissions in Wuhan, China Based on Activity Energy Data

摘要

The COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan has had a profound impact on China, which includes huge economic losses, resulting in a reduction in CO2 emissions. Therefore, assessing the effect of the epidemic on CO2 emissions is crucial for the formulation of emissions reduction policies. According to the energy activity data and the calculation method given by the IPCC, we explored the change of CO2 emissions in Wuhan from 2010 to 2020. The results shown that the CO2 emissions in 2020 had a 25% decrease, and mostly influenced by the secondary industry recession. We tried to establish the relationship between the epidemic and the reduction in CO2 emissions, and found out that CO2 were closely related to the severity of the epidemic. Finally, we discussed the drives of CO2 emission reduction through the LMDI model, and model revealed the reduction of economic level was the key factor for the CO2 emissions reduction. The data we proposed here can be regarded as a reference to support the CO2 emissions relevant policies during the COVID-19 epidemic.
