Minimally Invasive Treatment of Thyroid Diseases

Minimally invasive techniques in head and neck surgery are rapidly spreading worldwide. For thyroid surgery, the most used approaches are transoral and trans-axillary. In this chapter, we describe our trans-axillary approach using the Modena retractor (CEATEC R Medizintechnik) and the Da Vinci Xi robotic System (Intuitive, Sunnyvale, CA). Operative room setting and surgical instrumentation are illustrated in detail, as well as our step-by-step technique. Lastly, the final paragraph focuses on possible intraoperative complications.
