Robotic Appendectomy

Laparoscopic appendectomy represents the gold standard of surgical treatment for acute appendix disease. Robot-assisted surgery is rarely indicated to perform appendectomy as a single procedure due to high costs and no advantage in terms of pain and length of stay, over the pure laparoscopic technique. There are no studies reporting a description of the appendectomy technique by using the robotic system, but some authors reported robot-assisted appendectomies during oncological, gynecological, and urological procedures. The aim of this chapter is to explain how to perform a robotic appendectomy as a single procedure, describing the operating theater setting, the surgical instruments required, and the step-by-step surgical technique.
