Global SVOD Services in Spain: The Availability and Prominence of Spanish Films and Other Audiovisual Works

The film and television industries in Europe and around the world have been subject to rapid change with the development of global SVOD services, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, Disney+, Apple TV+ and others. Their strategic direction, globally operating as producers and distributors, has given rise to discussions about circulation, internationalisation, and transnational flows, to questions of power, control and regulation, as well as about their original production, acquisition and localisation strategies. This chapter focuses on the availability and prominence of content in the catalogues of global SVOD services, particularly national productions. The focus will be primarily on the availability and prominence of Spanish films within catalogues, and this will be examined in the wider context of series and other audiovisual works.
