The central nervous system is dependent on a continuous supply of enriched, oxygenated arterial blood. This has been accomplished by prioritizing blood supply to the brain as regards the initial branches of the major artery that leaves the heart, the aorta. Its first major branch is the common carotid, which supplies the neck, head, and brain. And the cerebral flow to the brain is divided into the anterior and posterior circulation which supplies the brain with the bulk of its enriched blood supply.
