Conclusion: Negotiating European Peripheries in TV Crime Series

With focus on the geopolitical and climatic discussions in the fourth season of Borgen (2022), the conclusion shows how series may have a very locative and specific attention towards places as one end of a parameter. At the other end, series may involve a lesser recognisable location placement, serving a larger representative spatiality or a metonymic relationship between the narrative and contextual issues. Such a balance between particular and the universal representativity shows how interpreting peripheral locations in European television series may assist in defining translocalism as a broader aesthetics across the whole continent in combination with local recognisability. In the chapter, we read the overall drift towards peripheries in European television series in the light of Nordic Noir’s influence on style, narrative, and sense of place, while we also show how contemporary creatives increasingly attempt to avoid comparison with Nordic Noir. Lastly, we conclude that the future of peripheral locations may point towards a more universal and less local sense of place, that is, rather peripheral spaces than peripheral places, as a consequence of the spread and dominance of global streaming services.
