Institutional Communication

This chapter discussed indigenous institutions that ensure smooth running and harmonious relationships such as the traditional ruler, secret societies, age grades, kinship and family, masquerade and marriage. The institutions are revered for reasons which include powers – spiritual and temporal – which they possess. They could order physical sanctions on offenders or non-conformists and even invoke the wrath of deities to ensure compliance with their directives.
