Conclusion – Indigenous Communication Around the World

Documentation of indigenous communication across the globe involving instrumental communication, demonstrative communication, iconographic communication, extra-mundane communication, visual communication, institutional communication, venue-oriented communication, taxonomic communication and axiomatic communication has been the focus of this excursion. It also covered some philosophical and epistemological issues that served to compare and contrast indigenous scholarship with Western paradigms. All in all, this has served to underline the global nature of indigenous communication and hopefully make it take its pride of place in the pantheon of media and communication studies. More so as there are increasing calls to have indigenous intellectual and cultural heritage recognized as legitimate knowledge systems just like their Western counterparts. This excursion attempts to bring indigenous communication into the fold. But in doing this, to be avoided in seeking validation based on Western knowledge as this results in “appropriating, tokenizing, and exploiting these knowledges.” So we approach this on an equal footing, as it should be.
