Order Cingulata

The order Cingulata includes all armadillos that are characterized by the body covered by keratin shields overlaid in bony plates; cheek-teeth homodont; skull elongated and flattened; rostrum elongated; extra zygapophysis in the posterior part of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. Distribution restricted to the American Continent. Two families occur in North America: Dasypodidae and Chlamyphoridae, classification following Gibb et al. (2016).
